LIVE PAINTING WORKSHOPS OVER ZOOM
These four-week groups are for abstract and semi-abstract painters who want thoughtful, individualized guidance on their own work.
You bring the paintings you're working on. Together, we look closely at what's happening in them: what's strong, what isn't resolved yet, where your eye is getting stuck, and what possibilities you may not be seeing.
We work with composition, color, shape, rhythm, movement, balance and the development of your own visual language.
These are small, supportive groups with plenty of individual attention.
There are two ways to participate:
NEW STUDENTS
If you have never studied with me before, the October group is for you. One group meets on Fridays, another on Saturdays
ALUMNI
If you've previously taken any class, workshop or retreat with me, online or in person, you can join my continuing alumni groups at a lower returning-student price.
What to Expect
HOW THE GROUPS WORK
Over four 90-minute sessions, we work directly with the paintings you're making.
Bring work in progress, paintings that feel stuck, questions you're wrestling with, or work you're simply not sure how to move forward.
We'll explore:
Composition and design
Color relationships and using color with greater intention
Shape, rhythm, balance and movement
Paintings that feel unresolved or stuck
Technical questions in acrylic, oil, cold wax and mixed media
Developing a more distinctive visual language
Building momentum and maintaining a regular studio practice
You'll also have opportunities to share work between sessions so the conversation and learning can continue throughout the month

One of the most useful tools I bring to these groups is live digital editing.
When you share a painting, I can work directly on an image of it using digital drawing tools. We might move or resize a shape, simplify an area, alter a color relationship, change a value, strengthen a composition or explore an entirely different direction.
Instead of simply telling you what I see, I can show you.
Nothing happens to your actual painting. We're experimenting visually, which gives you possibilities to consider when you return to the studio.
Each session also includes a short presentation of contemporary artists whose work gives us another way into the ideas we're exploring: color, shape, rhythm, composition, abstraction and personal visual language.
This is not a demonstration-based workshop where you spend your time watching me paint.
We work on your work.
All sessions are recorded and sent to participants.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What level of painter is this for?
These groups are designed for painters who are actively developing their abstract or semi-abstract work. You do not need to be a professional artist or have plans to become one. Some participants are relatively new to abstraction, others have been painting for years, and some are actively exhibiting and selling their work.
What matters most is that you are painting and interested in developing your work.
What's the difference between the New Student and Alumni groups?
The New Student groups are for painters who have not previously studied with me.
The Alumni groups are for anyone who has taken a class, workshop, online course, Zoom group, or retreat with me before. These groups are offered at a lower returning-student rate.
What mediums can I work in?
You are welcome to work in acrylic, oil, cold wax, mixed media, or other painting media. Our conversations focus primarily on the visual elements of painting: composition, color, shape, value, rhythm, movement, balance, and the development of your personal visual language.
How do I share my paintings with the group?
It's easy. When you enroll, I'll send you instructions for uploading images of your paintings to a shared Google Drive folder.
If you're uncomfortable using Google Drive, you can simply email your images to me and I'll take care of it.
You do not need to be particularly comfortable with technology to participate.
How does the digital editing of my paintings work?
During our live sessions, I can bring an image of your painting onto my screen and work with it digitally. This allows us to experiment with possibilities together. I may move or change shapes, adjust colors and values, simplify areas, explore composition, or show you another direction the painting could take.
You'll be able to watch these changes happen on screen and use whatever is helpful when you return to your actual painting.
What happens if I have to miss a class?
All sessions are recorded and sent to participants, so you can watch a session you miss.
Because much of the value of these groups comes from working together live, I encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible.
Will I receive individual feedback on my paintings?
Yes. Individual feedback is an important part of these groups. I keep the groups small so that participants have opportunities to bring their own paintings forward for discussion, questions, critique, and problem solving.
You'll also learn a great deal from looking closely at the work of the other painters in the group.
What is the refund policy?
If you need to cancel your enrollment at least 14 days before the first session, I will refund your payment in full, minus any non-refundable payment processing fees.
Because these are small groups with limited enrollment, cancellations made less than 14 days before the first session are non-refundable.
If I need to cancel a group for any reason, you will receive a full refund.
Is there a minimum number of participants?
Yes. These groups depend on having enough participants to create a lively and productive exchange.
If the minimum enrollment is not reached, the group may be cancelled. If that happens, you will be notified in advance and receive a full refund.
What happens after I register?
Once you've registered, you'll receive an email from me before the series begins with everything you need, including the Zoom link, instructions for sharing your paintings, and information about how we'll work together.
Then bring your paintings, your questions, and whatever you're wrestling with in the studio. We'll take it from there.
